About

Founded in May 2024 by Alexis G. Williams, the LGBTQ Fertility Fund (LFF) was born out of Alexis’s own experiences as a Black, queer woman with PCOS, whose partner is transgender. Alexis personally faced the emotional and financial hurdles of family-building within a community historically excluded from fertility resources. The question, "When will you two have a baby?" was never just a simple inquiry—it highlighted the costs, accessibility issues, and the lack of support for trans birth givers.
Despite the 2015 legalization of same-sex marriage, LGBTQ individuals still face significant barriers to family-building. 60% of LGBTQ people report that the cost of fertility services is a major barrier, and many struggle to find LGBTQ-friendly reproductive healthcare providers. The average cost for fertility treatments like IVF, artificial insemination, fertility preservation, and surrogacy can range from $12,000 to $15,000 per cycle, with many requiring multiple cycles. For LGBTQ couples, these costs can rise due to the need for donor sperm or eggs, gestational carriers, or other third-party assistance, bringing total expenses to over $50,000 or more. Additionally, transgender individuals seeking fertility preservation (like egg or sperm freezing before transitioning) face additional costs and barriers, making it even more challenging for them to preserve their reproductive options. In comparison, heterosexual couples typically face lower average costs, especially if they don’t require third-party assistance, further amplifying the systemic barriers and financial inequities that LGBTQ families, particularly transgender individuals, face in their family-building journeys.
Alexis saw these gaps firsthand and asked, “How can we move forward without support for those wanting to start families?” This question sparked the creation of LFF—to ensure that LGBTQ individuals and couples have the financial support, resources, and empowerment they need to build the families they deserve.
With 63% of LGBTQ millennials considering expanding their families in the coming years, the demand for inclusive fertility services is growing. Yet, only 25% of LGBTQ individuals report feeling confident they can afford these services. LFF provides grants, partnerships, and access to fertility preservation, artificial insemination, and surrogacy services—breaking down financial barriers and ensuring no one is left behind.

For Alexis, LFF is more than an organization—it’s the realization of her mission to create a world where LGBTQ people can build families without the burden of stigma and inequity. By empowering LGBTQ individuals with the knowledge, support, and resources they need, LFF is making the dream of parenthood a reality for many.
Transgender individuals face additional costs and barriers in preserving their fertility, making family building even more challenging.
